Music

Music surrounds me. Can you hear it?

Being a musician, and having many friends that are musicians… amazing musicians… I am continually surrounded by music. For me it sets the foreground of all that I do. My spouse says that to him it is the background that absorbs the quiet undertones of music in his life. He may not notice it the same way, but he knows it’s there, and he does appreciate and enjoy music.

We have a heart song that sings out with our entire being. It is the essence of who we are. Truly are. It’s our unique song only we can sing.

There is a night song we can hear in our deepest moments of despair that is meant to keep our focus on the notes, like beautiful shining colors that streak across the dark night sky of our damaged heart.

There is a life song ingrained deep within our souls since before we could remember. You find yourself humming some little tune as you go about your day. These seemingly inconsequential and disconnected moments like when you’re driving down the road and you remember the amazing moment you saw your first rainbow… captured a ray of sunlight between your fingers, caught raindrops on your tongue, built a sandcastle and watched waves come and sweep by washing away all your dreams. The time you skinned your knee so bad you couldn’t stop the tears — but as those arms of comfort wrapped around you, a feeling of peace came over you — and there was a certainty everything really would be alright.

Musicians may allude to themselves as a special breed of person that can spin musical moonbeams to light the way for others. There is truth in this — we are a unique bunch. It takes aptitude, talent, practice and much time for music to develop beyond personal enjoyment.

We just need to keep sight of the truth that each of us also have these very beautiful songs within us. Music and the songs within are such an integral part of us that we may overlook and devalue the importance of keeping ‘our song in our heart’.
